(Re) narrate
A Visual Commentary on Colonial Narratives
THIS PROJECT IS CENTRED AROUND STORYTELLING. THE ARTWORKS WILL BE A READING SPACE, A VISUAL INTERPRETATION OF STORIES.
THIS IS AN ATTEMPT TO DEVELOP VISUAL LITERACY.
THIS IS TO (RE) NARRATE.
*This project is unplanned, I intend to explore narrations rooted in colonialism, sovereignty, community and womanhood. I will be editing this text as I go on, and the artworks will unfold accordingly.
Edit 1: (Re) Narrate aims to expound upon the concept of the indigenous body, womanhood and community. Story telling will always play a crucial role in indigenous communities. The Narrative keeps us connected to our roots. The collection will highlight the indigenous without manifest representation of oppression and suffering, thus centering and emphasizing the indigenous identity.
Edit 2: (Re) Narrate stems from reflecting on & challenging imposed colonial narratives, and positioning the indigenous story within a field of power.
I work with archival monochrome photographs of indigenous populations of the Levant & North Africa. The photographs were taken in a colonial encounter, and mostly involved a relationship that is a one-way flow of power; the person behind the camera controls and has all the power over the narrative. (Re) Narrate is about re-appropriating and inserting the indigenous into those photographs and deciding how they function.
